The Schöner Brunnen or "Beautiful Fountain" was erected around 1385 but was replaced by a replica in the early 20th century. It has a sixty-two foot spire set into an octagonal pool.
The pool is decorated with statues of philosphers, evangelists and churchfathers. Forty stone figures are arranged in three rows, all of them are important 14th century sculptures.
The spire is decorated with statues of Electors, and Jewish and Christian heros and at the very top Moses and the seven prophets.
Between 1897 and 1902 the soft sandstone figures were replaced by shell lime ones. Only fragments of the original fountain figures remained and they are kept in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum.
The protective railing surrounding the fountain's basin was forged in 1587 by Paulus Kühn from Augsburg. In 1902 it was repaired and then furnished with the well-known golden ring that may be turned.
If you turn it three times, your wishes will come true. Or so they say :)
