In Albertinaplatz, the Monument Against War and Fascism commemorates the years Austria was under Nazi rule and is dedicated to all victims of war.
The monument stands on the grounds where hundreds of people were buried alive when they were hiding in a cellar of a big apartment block. It was destroyed in an air-raid on March 12th 1945. The exact number of the dead has never been verified.
The white monument by an Austrian sculptor Alfred Hrdlicka, is also called the Gate of Violence and is built from Mauthausen granite. It is split in two and is said to be representative of the gates to a concentration camp.
