The Burned Chamber

Wieliczka, Poland

Komora Spalona - The Burned Chamber, excavated 17-18th C. This chamber once was burnt out in an accidental methane fire.

The statues depict a scene from earlier days of mining, before modern ventilation, when experienced miners would use torches on long poles to burn out any methane gas that might have accumulated close to the ceiling (controlled burning).

As an ex-miner the very though of a controlled burn of methane terrifies me! Great image though.
