A real gem of the Hospitalkirche is over one hundred scenes from the Old and the New Testament, which are painted on wooden panels in the coffered ceiling and on the upper gallery supported by wooden pillars.
The pictures were painted by Heinrich Andreas Lohe from Hof (1648 - 1713), after motives taken from the 1688/89 illustrated Bible by Merian and Osiander.
The sick people from the next door hospital, while brought in beds to the church for Sunday Service, could only stay in horizontal position and all they could see was a ceiling. So it was painted to anable them to watch and meditate Bible scenes.
