Italian Soldiers Cemetery

Warsaw, Poland

July 2013 Challenge: 31 Views of Where I Live

Italian Soldiers Cemetery (Cimitero Militare Italiano a Varsavia) - Originally established in 1926 far away from the then-city-limits, today it is in the Bielany district.
The cemetery is the final resting place for 898 Italian soldiers captured by the German Empire army on the Italian front, who then died in the POW's camps located on Polish territory during World War I.
Ashes of another 1,415 Italian soldiers fallen or killed in German prisoner of war and death camps in World War II, were put in the graves between 1957-1967.

The cemetery reminds one of Italian military cemeteries, as its design is inspired from traditional Roman architecture, and its construction was financed by the Italian government.
Elements of the altar and the fence, as well as white gravestones, were also imported from Italy.
Maintained by the Italian Embassy in Warsaw, the cemetery features an entry gate complete with legionnaire shields, and a central avenue leading to a grandiose monument.

I like the composition here Jola! It's nice to read that the Italian Embassy maintains this cemetery. V
I wonder if that is common for other country embassies to maintain their own cemeteries?

War cemeteries are the most poignant of places, such sadness - for any nationality.

a peaceful place, after all those horror events of wars...
reminds me of a motto in the seventies: "make love. now war!"
and this motto is nowadays still adequate
