Traditional Musical Instrument

Warsaw, Poland

THE TRADITIONAL MONTHLY CHALLENGE ~ 2013 APRIL ADJECTIVES - "traditional"

The Morin Khuur (translating to "horse fiddle") is a traditional Mongolian bowed stringed instrument.
It is one of the most important musical instruments of the Mongol people, and is considered a symbol of the Mongolian nation.
Morin Khuur is a typical Mongolian two-stringed instrument. The body and the neck are carved from wood.
The end of the neck has the form of a horse-head and the sound is similar to that of a violin or a cello.
The strings are made from hairs from horses' tails.
The larger of the two strings (the "male" string) has 130 hairs from a stallion's tail, while the "female" string has 105 hairs from a mare's tail.
It is played with a bow made of willow, stringed with horsetail hair and coated with larch or cedar wood resin.

Superb presentation, loved listening and watching the instrument
being played, its more like a viol di gamba the way it is held, and the bow position. v
