The town was mainly built during the Baroque period, ideally located for trade, but it was also exposed to military attack.
It became a strategic military point and, after the old enceinte was reinforced, new fortifications of the Vauban type were added in the 17th century.
Old Town is surrounded by a wall with seven bastions and the moat.
Zamosc has preserved its original layout and fortifications.
The Fortress used to be the most powerful in Poland and was never conquered by any invading army.
