Yasmin Levy (Israel)
Yasmin Levy is an Israeli singer. She performs mainly Sephardic music, inspired by flamenco. She sings in Ladino, forgotten language of Spanish Jews.
In the year 2000,she released her debut album Romance & Yasmin which included ballads and lyric songs. The songs, performed in Ladino to the accompaniment of traditional instruments, enthralled the whole Europe.
Yasmin Levy not only sings medieval Sephardic ballads, but also reaches for contemporary poetry and mixes the Ladino tradition with flamenco.
Yasmins voice is beautiful, melodic, very emotional and at the same time very strong. Sometimes it is full of grief and sorrow, another time of anger, to be finally soothing.
At the same time it is not a smooth singing of European heirs of bel canto tradition, it is closer to archaic traditions of ethnic singing and nasal vibrations. All seems to be very deep and genuine.
Yasmins warm, expressive voice and her great arrangements are becoming more and more popular all around the world. She concentrates herself on all the continents, won many awards. She has been nominated for the BBC Folk Award in each of the past 3 years. In 2006 she performed in Carnegie Hall in New York.
