Seneca Army Depot

Photos of the former Seneca Army Depot including the Q area which has igloos that used to contain nuclear weapons. It was the largest number of nuclear weapons in the country. It closed in 2000. Q refers to the highest level of security clearence in the Army. The depot also contains a herd of rare white deer.

Was there from last of 72 through April of 74. Most boring place I have ever been. Good memories of people around me then. And yes the highlight was the Hidaway, maybe a trip or two to the college.

I was stationed with the 295th MP Company from 1982-1984. I really enjoyed my time there but it was really cold in the winter. Seeing white deer was no suprise since they lived within the compaound fences and we saw them all the time.

I was stationed with the 295th mp co. from 1968-1970 lots of history happen at that time... USA landed on the moon...wood stock. and Kent states riot..arm forces day 1970, in riot gear with lots of other MPs, but people that where to show up never did...lots of kind memories. may visit place this coming oct..

"Q" area actual refers to highest clearance in Atomic Energy Commission, who operated the "Q" from it's inception until Army took it over in 1960s. Name just stuck. I started as civilian in DSW October 1977 and closed Army presence down in 1996. Extensive radiation surveys done in every building done before closure including 815/816 and all igloos. All clean.

At SEAD 1966-67. Can anyone provide details of possible chemical exposure, particularly of people who worked in the "Q" Area? Any other hazards such as radiation accidents or incidents? I am trying to establish a connection between service at SEAD and various illnesses and conditions for a VA claim. (Also would just like to hear from old acquaintances.)

Served with 295th MP Co.1976-1978.To Dave Moeller,Tom Gorrow and anyone else Bushcel works grocery in Ovid. Mylniec lives Perry, South EAST of Buffalo. Perkovich lives in Buffalo.Keissling may still live Seneca Falls, Waterloo area.Bamburg passed away 2009. Stopped by his old photography studio. Now antique store.Spoke to Mylneic,Bushcel Sept 2015. Are there any of the MPs from the middle 60s. I was there in 1965 and just returned today sat. 4/30/16 from a visit to finger lakes, The place is a dump. Many fond memories. EM club just out the front gate.

i was at Sunny SEAD from 85 to 87,3rd platoon, would love to re-connect with some of the old Depot Dogs.I had a mini re-union with Gus Nus and Tom Prescott a few years ago. Would love to hear from Mike Landis,Kip Kendall,etc....Hell, I would even like to hear from Sgt Brian Huffman!!!LOL

Served at the Depot in the 295th Military Police Company 1976-1977. Proud to have served there..did my job the best I could until leaving for Soul South Korea...The 142nd Miliitary Police Company. Have good memories of the Depot in general....Midnight Chow!...Served with Little "T" from Philly...Jimmy Clay from Little Rock Arkansas...Marc Tarvernier and John Dallas from Staten Island, NY. The mission to me remains classified...need to know...that's what asked of me and that's how it stays...Hooaah!

Only decent food I remember was when they were cooking Thanksgiving dinner. Still, not all the memories are bad. I was by the place a couple of years agon and it is / was a prison of some sort.

I was there from Feb 77 until Oct 79 4th Platoon. My platoon Sgt was SFC Richard Lee and then SFC Ernest Anderson Alot of GREAT MEMORIES!!!

I was stationed at "Sneaky SEAD". Wat the name we called it back in '72 & '73. The fences weren't near as rusty ... the MP Station was block and with single paned windows and NO a/c. I read a few of the comments from "later" MP's and LMAO at comments about the "Mess Hall" food sent to "the area". It started with us as bologna sandwiches... ALL with mustard .. god how i hate mustard. Then it became "frozen TV dinners". There actually once was a petition signed by ALL to give "separate rations" to any/all that wanted them. Col. Mort (in charge) denied them because it meant the MESS Hall would have to GO!! THey got a NEW cook, instead of the DRUNK that had been booted out of the MP CO. as a drunk/security risk. The NEW guy made some good food when he KNEW the brass was coming to visit. The rest of had suspections that he used "OUR" food to further the catering business we heard he had in Syracuse. Either way .. the food SUCKed ... but as we used to say back then ..."if they GIVE the world an enema ... SEAD is where it would be STUCK!" Even the L.I.F.E.R.'2 (Lazy Ignorant F%$%^&$s Expecting Retirement)hated the place .. WOW .. it WAS a bad place! Prior to my arrival hear stories of MP shooting at groundhogs to break up the BOREDOM .. bullets holes WERE in most street signs! WE had guys re-up to get outter there ... but couple years later returned because they had the MOS for it!! We thought we were THERE to PROTECT our country's "secrets" ... but found it NOT that important the year the RAIN took out all the security alarms and we sat in a truck with a buddy to "guard" WHOLE rows of "igloos" .. in the DEAD of NIGHT .. yeah .. that was secure! LMAO

Stationed there 73-74, 295th MP Company, lots of memories. Never saw any white deer just lots of woodchucks. Our only place to recreate locally was the Hideaway run by Art and Barb! My last duty assignment in the army and i still keep in touch with some of my buds from SEAD. Hey carlson, I remember you! Hope life is treating you good!

Interesting pictures and trip down memory lane. I was an MP with the 295th MP's 1976 to 78. Most of the buildings here were vastly modernized in the early 80's from the conditions I knew. There were no satellite cages at the front of the igloos, just one big 4'x4' square concrete block with a long piece of steel beam protruding into a pipe in the ground called a "King Tut". The original guard house was nothing but cinder block construction with no protection of any sort except for a couple pieces of bullet proof glass. The Q area was also quite heavily wooded with huge stands of trees between the guard house, the plant , and streets lined with igloos. During those huge storms of 1977 78 we sometimes drove patrol in V 100 armored cars while they plowed the streets with pay loaders and graders. Our 4 wheel drive trucks couldn't handle it. Sometimes you couldn't see 50' because of the storms. On one occasion I saw an MP so cold that he threw up repeatedly and what did the cooks send us out for lunch that day but purple cool aid instead of coffee. Army life at it's finest............

Was stationed there in 1973-74 as an Army MP (295th MP CO) These pictures brought back alot of memories. In fact returned to the post in Sept. this year after 35 or so years. Many changes have taken place Still lovely country great area
