A short drive from Hobart is Taroona, home to the only remaining circular sandstone shot tower in the world. The shot tower produced rounded lead shot balls by letting molten lead fall in droplets from the top of the tower into a tub of water at the bottom. This tower has 318 steps to the top and was at one time the tallest building in Australia. Once you've climbed the tower, it's a great idea to have a devonshire tea in the cafe housed in the basement with a warm fire in the cooler months.
