Panorama of Lake Benmore at Sailors Cutting, Waitaki Valley, Canterbury

That road leads down the Waitaki Valley on its way to the coast and past several dams which recycle the waters of the Waitaki River into electricity and make up the Waitaki Hydro Electric Power Scheme. The Benmore Dam is the highest of these and created the lake seen here.
