We decided to split the workload for the team. I would build airframes and Alan would maintain engines and hardware for the models but the big breakthrough came when Alan bought a Myford 7 lathe now we could make components smaller lighter and stronger and with access to all the right alloys from the local aerodromes where Alan was on contract.
It has been said that a team race pilot needs the reflexes of a ice hockey player; we were still racing four in a circle but when practising we would sometimes have six in the circle - now that is
hairy stuff. We were racing with the Mill Hill club where I was on the committee.
Our first rally of 1959 was at High Wycombe where we made the semi-finals with the advantage of Tornado props.
