For Miriam Swab Cope and her children...

Chicago

Miriam Swab
Born: 1835
Venango, Pine Grove, PA, USA
Died: 1870
Warren, PA, USA

never just a name
you gave your life for a child
changing a family forever

you loved Henry Cope
leaving him with 7 lost children
fate wasn't kind to them

I carry your stories in my heart
my Grandma Williams never knew you
she was puzzled by your daughter

your little girl named Henrietta
never learned how to love
I know now what happened

I journeyed to your childhood home
your own mom they called Midwife Mary
she was with you as you lay dying

a strong pioneer woman who outlived most
buried now with your father on a lonely road
descendants spread out across the country

I remembered you at their grave site
tears flowing for what might have been
hoping you reunited with all your children

one mysterious time I will be with you
in the meantime I send you my love
feeling your presence as I write this

With no photos, I imagine my great great grandmother, Miriam Swab Cope, would look like her. I see her now holding all her sweet children she left behind at such a young age. It's Mothers Day 2006 and I hear Miriam's mystical voice calling within. I share with you hoping you remember all your ancestors flowing within...they make us who we are...John : )

Please note that Henry Cope, Miriam's widow, after his second marriage to Emma Heyborn, filed a deposition for disability benefits due to wounds received in the Civil War. In this deposition he lists Miriam Cope as his first wife, that she died in 1875 at Buckeye Furnace, Ohio in Jackson County, Ohio. This facility is now a State Historical Site and has been restored. In 1988, the remaining tombstones were catalogued; Miriam was not on the list of names. However, there is a good chance this cemetery is where her remains reside. The disposition of the church records from the Buckeye Furnace church remains a mystery. Apparently the church remained in use until the mid-1900's.

Very nicely done. I'm sure it would please her.
