One of the nicest landscapes on the Moor I often think. It is accessible
along the narrow backroads from from Mary Tavy, up past the Elephant's Nest inn to Horndon,
and then on to the end of the road at Willsworthy. (Check that the Army's red flags are not
flying on the day you visit as it is in the Danger Zone of the firing range).
From the parking place it is about 500 metres up to the leat (but it's easier to walk
along the farm lane before cutting up towards it on the corner of the hill).
On reaching the leat, do not cross but stay on the lower side where there is a path for
about 3km following the leat up to the point where it joins the river.
There is a rough metal gate on the path which is held by a loose chain
(used to be a nice stile with a dog gate by it.)
The path is rough and it is a good idea to wear walking boots and take a walking stick or hiking pole.
If you take your dog, ensure that it doesn't jump into the leat which, when full after rain,
can be 1 metre deep and fast-flowing. I know... I had to get my dog out
and it isn't easy in places where the leat has more of a wall!
