Old Ice Works Sourton Tor

The remains of the old ice Works up on Sourton Tor.
A rather unusual business that started in 1874 and ended in 1886. Shallow rectangular ponds were dug to catch the spring water at Sourton Tor,
and it was hoped that they would freeze solid in the winter. The ice was cut and stored underground in an insulated Ice House. Who bought the Ice?
Well-to-do people used it to keep food fresh and Plymouth fishermen used it to pack their fish. Quite how it managed to stand such a journey without melting is
hard to imagine until you remember there was a railway station at Bridestowe nearby.
