Your wonderful images gave me a taste of vertigo deja vu. I remember being drive for a couple of hours to this area, and I could move closer than about 3 metres from the safety fence. So we just turned around and drove all the way back to Sydney....................

You just got to love this area. There is so much to see and there are wonderful walks. I really love Australia and would go back in an instance!

Hi, and thank you for reminding me of the historical perspective. I took the steep mining car ride down the cliff face and all the kids were screaming like it was a roller coaster with the steepest descent in the world (which it has); yet along the path at the bottom several actually stopped to read about the history. I think one of the first tourists to take the mining car asked what would happen if the cable broke - and she was told it would only be 3 seconds before it was brought to rest. Of course that would be all the time gravity would need to take the car to the bottom, but she didn't know this!
Too, out at Uluru there is the irony of a tourist resort complete with hotels, pools, airstrip and sealed roads in a place so inacessible and so hot that explorers died trying to get there.

Thanks for the pictures. The 400 is indeed a wonderful camera to carry on a trip like this. I took this same walk 10 years ago on a brilliantly blue summer day... sadly, before digital. It's sobering to reflect on the convict crews that built the road to Katoomba in the last century and how easily (relatively!) we can travel today to a place like this from the UK or Portland, Oregon. My favorite discovery along this trail was the sign that said something like "Darwin passed this way." I can't remember the exact year mentioned on the sign, but I can at least dimly appreciate the time and effort required to make that trip! We can only wonder how he saw such a wild and ancient scene!
