1870

A walk round the 1870 Froeschwiller battlefield. 35,000 French troops faced 85,000 Prussians : 22,000 men were killed in ten hours before the French withdrew. Losses were about equal on both sides.

The Prussians besieged Paris and advanced as far as Orleans before the French asked for terms, and Alsace became German for the next 48 years.

Come to think of it, so did Lorraine.
