Today I set up a little photo studio in the kitchen to do some testing of my Powershot SX70, Powershot G5X MkII and my Canon 5D Mk IV. I did a designed experiment with two variables: ISO 100 and ISO 800: 24mm and 105mm focal length (more or less). The most interesting comparison for me was the ISO 800/105mm for the G5X Mk II and the Powershot SX70. This is today's comparison photo. The left side is the SX70. Clearly inferior to the G5X MkII (right), but not terrible. It turns out that a quick lick with Topaz Sharpen AI brings them mighty close. The main difference is that the fine print on the white label of the WhiBal grey card isn't recoverable, of course. Bottom line is that the sharpened SX70 ISO 800 image is suitable for our needs which is normally a 4X6 print for Ginny's scrap book.

So what did I get out of this exercise? Well, I got some more confidence in the SX70. Like any other camera, low ISO is preferable. We seldom take photos in low light conditions. If it comes to that, my iPhone 12 Pro Max and Ginny's iPhone 7 are just the ticket. They served us well in Egypt,
