I had mentioned some time ago that I was working on a project to digitize our collection of Family VHS tapes. Today I finished the transcription. It was a long time to get it done, but I now have a digital archive. Not sure what I am going to do about it. I could do some editing and make short clips. I think what I am going to do is go through them and make a timeline for each one. That seems the easiest to tie up loose ends.

One thing I found out about VHS tape players is that the counter doesn't work unless there is a signal on the tape. It took me a while to get that one. It was resolved by lifting the little door and seeing if the tape was moving. This is my set-up. My old lap top hooked into the VHS player on the lower left. Turns out the S-Video output is only for the DVD player. Reading instructions revealed that one when I couldn't get it to work. As far as distribution to the kids is concerned, there are 28 Gigs of video which will fit nicely on a appropriately sized thumb drive. You can get 32 Gig drives for about five bucks.
