An encoder senses pressure altitude to be sent via the radar transponder to air traffic control.
Static system supplies outside ambient air pressure to the altimeter, airspeed and rate of climb indicator.
A panel like that would be nice, but there are myriads of electrical wires, controls and pneumatic tubing which make it very difficult to do.
