Day 15
We spent the day in Norfolk, Virginia. The day started with a bus tour of the Norfolk Naval Station, the largest naval base in the world. It was interesting to see how much stuff they have there. There is a huge airport as well as a huge harbor. There were three aircraft carriers in residence. There were lots of other vessels including a submarine. Our guide was a lady bosun's mate who provided a lot of interesting information. When she is at sea she gets to steer a destroyer. That could be fun.
One of the major objectives for the day was the Chrysler Museum of Art. This was actually one of Ginny's major objectives, but I found some interesting things. There is a glass studio where they were having a glass blowing demonstration. It was fun to watch. In a period of about an hour they made an object based on a drawing some youngster made. Once they start work it is non-stop with a lot of trips to the oven to reheat the piece. There is a lot of skill involved.
We ended the day with a boat excursion to the Norfolk Navy Station. The weather was a little crappy. One good thing was the commentary about what we were seeing. That makes it a lot more interesting.
