We spent the day at the Bishop Museum in Honolulu. It has a very good collection of Polynesian artifacts from all the major islands. The museum was started in 1889 and many of the items were collected at that time. That makes it interesting. There was also a little science museum which was interesting but really intended for kids. I don't have a problem with that, but not too interesting to me.

The real highlight of the day was a planetarium presentation about how the Polynesians would navigate on their long voyages. The navigator was called the "wayfinder." They had absolutely no instruments. They would be able to tell their latitude by observing when certain pairs of stars set simultaneously. Of course, they couldn't figure longitude, just like all other sailors before the invention of the chronograph by John Harrison. Interesting side note, wayfinding is a course taught at Brigham Young University. I would like to try that.

Today's photo is one of those "It's a small world" things. Our guide for the Bishop Museum was a gentleman named Will. He gave an interesting talk as we meandered around the exhibits. At the end of the whole thing we got to chatting and found out he is a graduate of Oregon State, just like Ginny. So here a mini reunion of the class of 1958 with the class of 1972. How cool is that.
