One of our favorite treats is Walker's shortbread cookies. We don't have them too often because they are (1) loaded with calories and (2) expensive. I get some for Ginny on special occasions and we enjoy them immensely. So my mind started to wander and a quick Bing search unearthed recipes for Scottish shortbread cookies. The basic recipe is simple: butter, sugar and flour. No leavening or yeast. Three ingredients, I can handle that.
I made some. Easy job. They were really good. At least as good as Walker's. So I got to thinking about whether there was a significant difference in cost. Our local store carries them. The Walker's variety sells for $11.75 per pound. My calculated cost is $1.76 per pound. Big difference. Worth the effort because making them is fun and easy. Now, these things are little calorie bombs. We call them fat pills. My yield was 27 cookies of about the same size. The whole recipe is 2836 calories which calculates out to 105 calories each. We need to show some restraint. Ginny's goofy girlfriends are coming over tomorrow and they will enjoy them, reduce the inventory and remove some of the temptation.
