Today we visited the Maryland State Capitol in Annapolis. It boasts the oldest building where a state legislature is continuously serving. From November 26, 1783 to August 13, 1784, Annapolis was the capital of the United States. It was here on December 23, 1783 that George Washington resigned his commission in the Continental Army. That was important because he believed that the military should be commanded by a civilian government and that tendering his resignation to the congress would symbolize that. Today's photo is of a statue of George Washington in the old Senate chamber on the spot where he tendered his resignation.
Unfortunately, there were no guided tours available. Lots of signage which helped, but a human guide is very desirable. One of the neat things was the silver service from the USS Maryland. There have been four ships named USS Maryland over the years. The current one is a Ohio Class submarine, SSBN 738. Three pieces from the silver service are aboard that vessel.
We got done pretty quickly then headed to Smyrna, Delaware for lunch with friends. That was fun. Then it was on to Kennett Square, Pennsylvania for a long weekend with the grandchildren.
