One more full day in Fredericksburg, and a very busy one at that. We started out at the Hugh Mercer Apothecary. He was a physician and a General in the Continental Army. He was killed at the Battle of Trenton on January 12, 1777, a couple weeks after the famous crossing of the Delaware. The apothecary had very good program about medicine during the colonial times. Next was a trolley ride through the city with very good narration. We like trolley rides because it gives us ideas about what to see.

Another president, James Monroe, has strong ties to Fredericksburg. He practiced law here for a while. The original buildings are gone, but there is a nice museum on the site. I have to admit that when shown a painting of James Monroe I could't identify who it was. He was the fifth President of the United States and is famous for the Monroe Doctrine and negotiating the Louisiana Purchase. Next stop was the location of Ferry Farm, the boyhood home of George Washington. They are doing archaeology on the site and are building a replica of his house.

The final stop was Belmont, the home of Gari Melchers (who???) He was a famous artist, but not famous enough for me to have heard of him. There was quite a bit of his work on display, but I certainly didn't recognize any of it. We managed to squeak in just before they cut off the tours (lucky me).

Today's photo is of the Hugh Mercer Apothecary. The lady on the steps was one of the guides. She gave an excellent presentation.
