Today the group headed back from Lake Yellowstone to Jackson Hole. This time the road south was open . Along the way we stopped at Lewis Falls, West Thumb and Mormon Row. Lewis Falls is right on the road, so getting photos is easy. Also, the sun was right. Good Luck. Our stop at West Thumb was neat because there was fog in addition to the steam coming off the thermal pools. I expected to see the Monster from the Lagoon walking up out of the water. At Mormon row we had a very interesting experience. There were lots of bison about. As we drove out of the place, three groups of about five bison came running across the field and crossed the road within meters of our stopped bus. These guys can run fast. Don't get in their way!
One of the most interesting things was stopping along the road that was closed a few days before because of the forest fire. We got out of the van and had a look around. I snapped a few and then we headed out. In the evening I had a closer look at my photos and noticed that in this one, the end of the log closest to the camera is actually still burning with red embers. It doesn't look like it is going to spring up into a fire (most of the good fuel is already consumed.) The firefighters can't go through the whole forest looking for these isolated hot spots so they just leave them and let them burn out. This was the first time I ever had a close look at a forest fire. This one was only two days old.
