We spent the day around Page, Arizona. We are here for three nights. The reason Page exists is the construction of the Glen Canyon Dam in the late 50s and early 60s. It provided 1300 megawatts of power generating capability and also provided control of the flow of the Colorado River. The latter turned out to be somewhat of a disaster because the floods and drought periods were critical to the ecology of the area. I take no sides in that one.
There were some good movies at the visitor center. We are total suckers for the videos that are offered at various visitor centers. That are always informative and interesting. In the afternoon we headed a few miles into Utah to visit the Grand Staircase Escalante visitor center. Of course we watched the film. It was good. We also had a nice chat with the BLM (Bureau of Land Management) person who was very helpful in understanding the geology of the area.
Although it was still fairly early in the day, we decided to call it quits. Off to Walmart to get some salads and restock our wine supply. Then it was back to the room and a casual afternoon and evening of catching up. For me, it was processing photos. For Ginny, it was working on her scrapbook, which is most excellent.
Today's photo is a panorama of the Glen Canyon Dam and bridge. The bridge was built to support the dam project. Before its completion it was a 200 mile trip for trucks to cross the Colorado River to the other side of the dam site.
