We spent the day in Trenton, NJ. I hear some of you asking why on earth would we do that. Well, the main attraction was the New Jersey state capitol. We take the opportunity to visit state capitols whenever we get near them. We had a very nice tour of the building. It is quite nice, but pretty small. Afterward we went over the the Old Barracks site and had a really fantastic tour. We had three guides dressed in period costume, each one presenting a view of life at the barracks which was interesting. We also had an interesting presentation about smallpox. I found out the difference between an inoculation and an immunization. These barracks were built in 1758 to house British soldiers during the French and Indian war (also called the Seven Year's War in other parts of the globe). During this time, the residents of the colonies were quite loyal British subjects. It wasn't until after the war that things went south for the British Monarch. He spent all this dough on the war and was deeply in debt. So like any other government he started taxing the heck out of everybody he could reach. This included the Colonies. As time wore on, the taxes increased dramatically. Discontent in the colonies also increased dramatically. Then POW, the war for independence started. After eight years or so the colonists prevailed and the British withdrew, never to return. Well, they did come back in 1812, but that is another story.
