We are only a few miles from the battlefield at Brandywine. The Revolutionary War battle occurred on September 11, 1777, which was in the first full year of the war. It was an interesting event because it was the largest battle of the entire war, involving a total of about 40,000 people. The colonists were beaten, but an orderly withdrawal ensued. That was a good thing. This particular battlefield was once a state park, but funding was severely cut. It is now run by a foundation. Unlike many National Parks, the visual stuff and museums are quite limited. I found their web site and read the narrative of the battle and looked at the maps. this was good preparation for the visit. We went on a tour of this house, the Ring House. It was Washington's headquarters during the battle. We had a guide who was very knowledgeable. Because we had prepared and also because there were only the two of us on the tour, we were able to have a good conversation about the event and other related history. This was a real good place to stop.
