We traveled back from Battle Harbor today. The trip started out with a 1 1/2 hour ferry ride on a small boat followed by two hours in the bus on a dirt road laden with potholes which severely limited our speed. We ended up in Red Bay and visited a couple sites which were interpretive centers for the Basque whaling venture which lasted from about 1550 to 1620. These guys came over from the Basque country every spring and returned home in the fall with their cargoes of whale oil. It turns out that a large number of artifacts have been found, including clothing. This is a photo of a Basque whaling boat which was recovered from the bottom of the bay. After proper preservation treatment, it was reassembled and put on display. I thought it was really interesting to see the structural details.
