We spent another whole day at the John Day Fossil Beds. This time it was at the Sheep Rock Unit which includes the Thomas Condon Paleontology Center and Visitor Center. There were a bunch of short hikes that took us into some really unusual (for a Gulf Coast Texan) rock formations. I got to appreciate a lot more about how the terrain was laid down over the last 45 million years. Lots of layers. It was very interesting to see them in the cliffs.

Anyway, we were heading down the road toward a hiking location when we saw this and I hit the brakes. The light was just right. We pulled over and took some pictures. This is called Cathedral Rock. Very cool looking.

The John Day Fossil Beds were definitely a bucket list item for me and we had a good time there. It was hotter than hell, but with enough water and diet root beer you can survive the conditions and have a really good time. I think I would like to come back here again and try to talk to one of the paleontologists. Off season is a good time for that sort of thing.
