June 19, 2011, part 1

My friend John Cooper sent me an interesting video about "cut shells." These are shotgun shells where you cut around the base and leave the outer shell and shot column intact as a unit. It is intended to simulate a shotgun slug. John tells me they are outlawed in the UK, but they are perfectly legal here in the US. If I am not mistaken, there are some areas where deer hunting is only allowed with these 12 gauge slugs. Anyway, I went out down by the creek and gave it a try. This is a photo of the cut shell. The other photo from today shows the result.

The front end of the shell stays intact during flight. The idea is to simulate a rifled slug.

So the paper tube moves down the barrel with the shot and acts as a choke would?
If so, what happens if the gun has an actual choke? Same action but longer distance before it spreads?
