Thank you John for taking these beautiful pictures. I was actually trying to find something on Google about Hurlingham Boarding School run by the Miss Rosemary Whitehead on Deodar Road and this is where my search took me! The comments here are the only personal accounts on the net as far as I can tell. I attended this school from 1979 to 1982 and I want to thank the Guest contributor who wrote about their experience on 14 Dec 2012, because I survived the same treatment - there was a lovely teacher only 24 at the time, whom I adored and a wonderful woman from Australia who took such loving care of us boarders at the weekend, though sadly I don't recall their names. Miss Whitehead and her 'accomplice' Miss Young were horrid though. However the bond between the pupils especially the boarders was one of true camaraderie which I will forever treasure.

Dear John,

Thank goodness that the world, and we collectively, are far more aware and changing, and that our children have grown up in a far more loving, responsible and aware society. Photographing the positive is a wonderful way to achieve that. I'm so sorry to hear of your experience also.

Just thank God that it is not the 1960's anymore and that we have moved so far forward! I truly hope that you have recovered from your own experience.

Guest, you have my sympathy, I was not at a boarding school, but I suffered a lot of mental torture at the hands of my teachers.
It seems that the profession attracts a lot of sadists.
At least we both have some good memories of Putney.

I grew up in Putney also and these photographs bring back lovely memories of the river at close view, where I too attended Miss Whitehead's boarding school, from 1974, then called Hurlingham School, in Deodar Road (now thankfully relocated and the new school bears no resemblance to the institution that Miss Rosemary Whitehead once ran). The memories of the river are wonderful but the wooden spoon and hairbrush on the back of the hand (handed out personally by Miss Whitehead), plus being made to sleep in a sleeping bag on a hard office floor, stand on a chair in the classroom as an example to others, all as 'punishment', at the ages of between 4 to 11, are not. Goodness knows what she did when corporal punishment was abolished! These photos bring back the good memories. That's marvellous, thank you.

I used to live in Putney for several years and know all these spots from which you have taken the photos. Brings back very happy memories for me. Putney is a special place particularly the river and bridge. Thank you.

Love your photos. I spent an awful childhood in Hurlingham Court 40+ years ago, and remember well the tunnel up to the bus stop the other side of the bridge near those steps up from Bishops Park. That footbridge and entrances both ends also brought back quite a few memories...some better than others. When I used to walk back from a little primary school in Deodar Road (Miss Whitehead's) there was always a lovely woman standing in the middle throwing bread to the gulls. She was like my guardian angel and kept me feeling safe from flashers and other baddies along there.
I would love to see some pictures of the inside of All Saints Church.I used to be a Brownie in the 25th Fulham pack and adored the days of carrying the banner up the aisle, in the 2 years or so of me being allowed to go to Brownies. (My father was a strict Greek Orthodox man and thought I was getting too spiritually anglicized!)
I think there was some lovely red stained glass window there. Have you any photos?
I love your humour. Particularly like the pic of the beer bottle left by Mr/s Lonely. Could well have been me as a teenager.
