Ed, working on the assumption that "downstream" is the direction of the river as it goes toward the sea. And that "upstream" is the direction of the river towards its source.
Twickenham Bridge is most definitely upstream.
I have driven a boat from this point on the river down to the sea at Sheerness.
That was a downstream trip.
