Hammersmith Bridge

The bridge runs between the borough of Hammersmith and Fulham on the north side, and the borough of Barnes on the south side.
This is the second bridge on this site. Opened on the 11th of June in 1887 at a cost of £82,116.
It is 700 foot long, and 43 foot wide.
The IRA bombed it twice, once in 1939, and again in 2000.
The bridge shakes, rattles and rolls when the traffic is passing over it. The vibrations are incredible, you feel it will fall down any minute.

a wonderful set of photos of my favourite childhood bridge. I used to have tea with one of my teacher's, miss Melville, who lived in Digby Mansions.

a wonderful set of photos of my favourite London bridge. I grew up in Fulham and used to visit my school teacher, miss Melville, for extra lessons. she lived in digby mansions.
often walked along hammersmith mall with my mother and great-uncle. I mean the original mall, as I expect there may be some awful shopping mall in hammersmith now!

I like this monograph dedicated to a single bridge. It shows it from different angles and collects interesting details which gives us the impression to be ready to cross the bridge too.

I have great affection for this bridge as I grew up in the house on the corner of Riverview Gdns and the bridge(late sixties and seventies) Although I have to say I preferred it when it was blue, not to keen on the green

The bridge looks terrific in these photographs - it's amazing to see how it not only is but appears suspended over the water.

Steve, considering this bridge was built 120 years ago to carry horse and cart traffic. It is in pretty good condition.

The suspension system with all the plates is pretty cool. Can't say that I have seen one quite like that. It gives it a bit of an "overengineered" look. Cool bridge, however.
