Lacandonia schismatica

Photos from a trip to see Lacandonia schismatica, a mycotrophic plant in the family Triuridaceae. Lacandonia is most famous for being the only flower that typically produces its androecium (stamens- male reproductive organs) above the gynoecium (carpels- female reproductive organs) rather than below. It obtains all of its nutrition through its roots by parasitizing fungi associated with the roots of nearby photosynthetic plants.
