Even though the size of the flowers can overlap, the placement of the reproductive organs on the column is different between the two species. The easiest way to tell at a glance is to look at the opening to the nectar spur from the front of the flower. The nectar pore is circular to even a slightly vertical oval in P. grandiflora, while P. psycodes has an opening that is constricted from top to bottom (giving the opening a wide rectangular or "dumbbell" shape).

How do you know these are the "lesser" purple fringed orchids, and not the "greater" purple fringed orchid (platanthera grandiflora)?
