Batanes - Land of the Ivatans

Going to Batanes is like going back to a world frozen in time. It comprises a group of islands that for centuries has been shaped by the sea and wind. It has rugged cliffs and hills that are covered with grass and solitary trees. Cattle and livestock is not an unfamiliar scene on the hillside.

The people of Batanes, known as Ivatans are friendly by nature. The province is very peaceful and prides themselves with zero crime rate. The only thing violent in Batanes are the ravaging storms and typhoons that regularly visit them every year.

Enchanting and majestic. A place to behold - one of the precious gems of the Philippine archipelago... that is Batanes.

Excepr for the increased number of motorbikes, Batanes is still so charming. Joel, your pictures capture the beauty, the charm, the colors of the place & the people so well! great photos! I hope I get the chance to visit Batanes... A friendly reminder to those planning to visit Batanes - Tourists should never buy the Ivatan Vakul. It is made from endemic and endangered species of plant (Philippine Date Palm or Voyavoy) that grows only in tiny parts of Batanes. If tourists buy a vakul, that plant could become extinct and so will be that culture o...f Batanes and the country. Only Ivatans should own a vakul.
