Owl Butterfly

Owl butterflies (genus Caligo) are large, brown, tan and black butterflies from tropical areas. The lower underside of each wing of these butterflies has a large eye-shaped marking, making the butterfly look like the face of an owl when it is at rest. These markings probably scares away many predators. The forewings of many owl butterfly species are iridescent. The two front legs of this butterfly are very small. Classification: Family Brassolidae, Genus Caligo, many species.
