Cerro Rico*

“Rich mountain,” which rises to 5000 meters, once contained dense deposits of silver. The Spaniards started mining here in the 1540s, and 100 years later the city of Potosi was the largest, richest city in the world. Over the course of about 250 years, the Spaniards extracted 45,000 tons of pure silver from the mountain.
