the Minsk*

The Minsk is a legendary bike. It’s a two-stroke, 125cc touring dirtbike made in Belarus. The design has not changed much since the 1950’s and it uses no battery. It is the workhorse of rural Vietnam, and despite being unable to pronounce the name, any man in that region can diagnose and fix one on the spot. Being Soviet, it is badly prone to overheating, and I frequently had to stop to cool it off with water and deal with other problems. By the time I finished my trip, the bike had been almost completely dismantled and reassembled by various farmers along the road, and I could take the carburetor apart and put it back together blindfolded. Riding a simple, old beater that breaks down often is a great way to learn about motorcycles.
