kotekas*

People of the highlands of Irian Jaya commonly wear traditional clothing, which varies slightly from tribe to tribe but typically consists of a koteka for men (the penis cone) and some sort of straw skirt for women. When wearing the koteka, a string is usually tied up around the loose skin of the scrotum to keep it out of harm's way. It is also common for people to wear western clothes, usually secondhand shorts and t-shirts brought in by the missionaries. Generally the younger generations are more likely to wear western clothes but there is no rule, and some individuals wear a koteka one day and shorts from a high school basketball team the next. It is not particularly warm in the highlands, and many of the older men wear ski caps like this one, donated by missionaries.
