the top cutters*

In the shipbreaking yards, the lowest level job is that of the men who pick up the final cut steel plates by hand and carry them to the trucks, on their shoulders like a coffin. It’s backbreaking work - these plates weigh a ton or more and as many as 30 men shuffle under their load. Next are the guys who cut up smaller sections of the ship that have been hauled to shore. These tend to be the youngest workers, and indeed many of them are around 14. The job of hauling the heavy steel winch cables out to the ships and attaching them to sections of ship to be hauled to shore is not much better. Men working with plasma torches inside the chambers of the ship’s hold face the danger of igniting flammable vapors which can cause deadly explosions. These are usually the most experienced workers. The best job is probably that of the top cutters- the guys who climb to the top of the ship and work in the open air, cutting off portions of the superstructure.
