Red Rock Canyon State Park (California)

California's Red Rock Canyon State Park is located on Hwy-14, about 25 miles north of Hwy-58 (or 30 miles north of Mojave when taking Hwy-14 out of town).

To see what the park identifies as the Scenic Cliffs (assuming you are driving north on Hwy-14) make a right turn "immediately" after you pass the bridge (just south of the Visitor's Center roadway) and another quick right on the dirt road that heads back towards the bridge. The drive to the Scenic Cliffs from Hwy-14 is about 2.7 (maybe 2.9) miles and I strongly recommend a high clearance vehicle. That said, I don't think a 4X4 is necessary (but high clearance for the Scenic Cliffs is a definite must).

On Hwy-14, if you go north past the "Scenic Cliffs turn-off" about too yards (but before you get to the Visitor's Center turn-off) you will see the Red Cliffs on your right hand side; note, there is a parking lot there for anybody interested in stopping.

My favorite area was on the left hand side of the paved road that takes you to the Visitor's Center; for whatever reason (or lack of) the park did not name that particular formation. If you go all the way to the Visitor's Center you will see the rest of the park isn't very colorful; in fact it's pretty much gray with lots of erosion. My advice is to forget about going to the Visitor's Center "unless" you want to camp there overnight.

Note, in my opinion everything worth shooting at Red Rock Canyon is an early morning shot.

IMPORTANT, please note ... whenever you visit a Pbase gallery for the first time, or if you have clicked on a size smaller than "original size" while visiting this or any other Pbase gallery, please be sure to click on "original" size, otherwise you will be presented with a low quality JPEG as versus the high quality JPEG (the size doesn't change, only the quality level of the JPEG compression); you only have to do this once, on the very first picture you look at.

Alternatively, on the very first picture you can add "/original" to the URL in the address bar and hit "refresh" or "go" as the case may be; again, you only have to do this once (on the very first picture). This "/original to the URL" approach is the sure-fire/no-mistake/best way to ensure you will see the highest quality JPEG presentation.
