These particular picture demonstrate two things. First, if you start out with renderings that badly compress shadows (e.g. RSP's internal profile or the ETC-V100) you can't properly pull out detail using Photoshop's "Highlight/Shadow" tool. Second, shadows are not the only thing to consider - of all the profiles tested the EOSpix profile did the best job of rendering highlight information (look carefully at the cloud detail).
