The Colorado River Gooseneck (Viewed From Dead Horse Point State Park)

This very popular Colorado River gooseneck (as viewed from inside the state park) was shot early in the morning. The picture is of the east facing side of the formation that was carved out by the Colorado river over a period of many years. In my opinion this scene is best shot about 1.5 to 2.0 hours after sunrise (if you go too early shadows will dominate the scene). Dead Horse State Park is just off the road you take from Moab to visit Canyonlands National Park. About twenty minutes from Canyonlands National Park there is a fork in the road; simply take the left fork at the "sign for the state park" and you will be at the gooseneck in about twenty five minutes.

I should point out that if you look carefully around the gooseneck you can see a bit of the Shafer Trail; this is a dirt road between Moab (low elevation) and Canyonlands NP (higher elevation). Note, if you are going "downhill" (i.e. start at Canyonlands NP and go to Moab) the Shafer Trail is a really fun drive ... but be aware a reasonably high clearance vehicle is required to travel from end-to-end on this trail.
