2008-05-11 Green Swamp Orchids and Carnivorous Plants

2008-05-11 Through frog-strangling rain, Ron Parsons and I visited several of the most productive areas of the Greater Green Swamp. Ron (resident of San Francisco, California) had let me know that he was going to be in the eastern North Carolina area, and wondered if I could show him around -- especially the more interesting parts of the Green Swamp. We met in Supply, North Carolina (about 5 miles from the center of the Green Swamp) and attempted to wait out the rain. It did let up a bit, and we headed off to see what we could find.

There was not much going on in Big Island or in Little Island, so we then headed off to Myrtle Head Savannah, where I had been the previous weekend. It was raining furiously, so we waited in the truck until it let up a bit. We finally decided that we could withstand a light rain, so we headed out to see the flora. It was every bit as good as the past weekend; moreover, there were numerous Calopogon pallidus scattered all about the savannah. I re-photographed the Sarracenia flava var. atropurpurea, a rarity in North Carolina.

We then headed off to Boiling Spring Lakes, which has some of the best Dionaea muscipula (Venus flytraps). Ron had never seen them in the wild, so he was happy to be able to photograph them.

All in all, the trip was pretty fulfilling except for the fact that I left my camera bag with all of its contents by the truck when we moved on from the flytrap site to check on another location. When I realized that I had left the bag in the ditch at our last stop, we returned, but the bag was gone -- an expensive lesson.
