Percy Tomb

Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire

The Percy Tomb was built between 1340 and 1349. The occupant of the tomb is not known for certain but is probably Lady Eleanor Percy who died in 1314. The tomb was created by highly skilled 14th century masons.

Beverley Minster has survived the centuries relatively unscathed. At the time of the Reformation the minster was a collegiate church and not a monastery so survived the dissolution. In the 1600s local military leaders looked favourably on the church and it survived being used as a garrison for troops in the civil war and was not harmed by the Puritans. An ornate tomb such as this would more commonly have been regarded as “popish” and would have been destroyed.
