Camp Hale - Continental Divide National Monument – Colorado

Created in October 2022 and run by the United States Forest Service (USFS), Camp Hale - Continental Divide National Monument was the site of the U.S. Army mountain climbing, alpine and Nordic skiing, cold-weather survival training facility during the Second World War. With an elevation of 9,200 feet and an annual snowfall of twelve feet the area was perfect for this type of training. After receiving their specialized instruction, the 10th Mountain Division was deployed throughout Europe during WWII in areas requiring these special skills. At the height of its service, Camp Hale housed over 15,000 soldiers in 245 barracks on the 1,500-acre site. After the war, many of the soldiers were instrumental in establishing America’s ski industry.

From 1958-1964, the site was also used by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to train Tibetan Freedom Fighters to fight against the Chinese communist government.
