Colonial National Historical Park – Yorktown Battlefield – Virginia

Yorktown Battlefield, part of Colonial National Historical Park, memorializes what would become the pivotal battle in America’s fight for independence.

In August of 1781 British General Charles, Lord Cornwallis had occupied Yorktown with over 8,000 of his men. The French, who had allied themselves with the US in 1777, blockaded the Chesapeake Bay keeping supplies from Cornwallis and his army and the combined forces of the US and France relentlessly bombarded Yorktown. By October, his army depleted and surrounded, Cornwallis was forced to surrender to General George Washington. The decisive victory led to the British agreeing to peace talks and the end of the war in 1783.
